Galaxy M87

Hubble data gave astronomers conclusive evidence that a massive black hole resides in the center of the giant galaxy called M87, located 50 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.

Eagle Nebula

Monstrous columns of gas and dust form the heart of the Eagle Nebula in this dramatic Hubble image.

The picture shows newborn stars emerging from"eggs" at the tips of finger-like structures on the giant gas columns.

Comet Levy

Jupiter looks badly bruised after two fragments of Comet Shoemaker Levy-9 slammed into the planet in the most closely watched event in astronomical history.
