The Hubble Deep Field

Imagine looking through a keyhole and seeing all the way to the edge of the visible universe. This image provides such a view. For 10 days, the Hubble Space Telescope gathered light from a speck-sized spot in the sky to reveal this astonishing array of galaxies. Besides classical spiral- and elliptical-shaped galaxies, the "Hubble Deep Field" includes a bewildering variety of other shapes. Some are so distant that scientists believe they may have formed shortly after the creation of the universe.
