Advantages of a larger mirror

A larger mirror would allow astronomers to gather more light. If the telescope is equipped with instruments sensitive to infrared radiation as well as a larger mirror, astronomers could peer back farther into space and time and see the red-shifted light from the early universe through the clouds of gas and dust that block our view in visible light.

Building a foundation for future discovery

While policy makers and the astronomical community study the future of space astronomy, Institute scientists and technicians continue amassing experience on how to operate successfully a sophisticated space-based telescope. Their expertise has built a foundation for the next generation of discovery.
